The School Choir
Formerly known as the University of Nigerian Chorus, it was created in 1985 as a result of collaboration between Dr Achinivu K. Achinivu, a Lecturer in the University of Nigeria and the late Prof Ola Rotimi, one of the leading playwrights in Nigeria at that time. They were to perform a play ’Hope of the living Dead’ by Prof Rotimi in Lagos, the then Capital, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Nigeria in 1986. The chorus, brought together by Dr Achinivu was made up of students within and outside the Music department who were passionate about singing. From then on, the University chorus became a force to reckon with as they performed in National and University events in the 80s and early 90s.
Though the chorus group didn’t last long due to the downturn of the economy, the music department has since carried on the legacy of the former group which was to produce good quality music wherever they go. They entertain guests with stunning presentations during major school events in the different genre of Chorus, Orchestra, Opera and dance.
The music department offers a diversified curriculum for interested students based on their preferences in the following areas which are also used for their individual assessment:
- Chorus: African & Western
- Instrumental: African & Western
- Operatic: African, Western Dance drama
- Dance: African & Western
