Department of Archaeology and Tourism
General Information
The Department of Archaeology and Tourism offers a Four-Year B.A. Honours degree programme in Archaeology or Tourism for the entrance candidates; a three-year B.A. Honours degree in Archaeology or Tourism; a two-year Diploma in Tourism and Museum Studies; and a one-year PGD programme in Tourism and Museology. The department runs combined honours programmes with History, Sociology/ Anthropology and Linguistics.
Archaeology could also be combined with the following subjects as both four-year and three Honours Degree programme: Languages, Fine and Applied Arts, Religion, Philosophy, Geography, Geology and Botany.
In addition to courses taught through formal lectures, students of archaeology as well as those combining archaeology and some other discipline are required to do supervised laboratory practicals and undertake at least three field trips. Those offering the B.A (Honours) Degree in Tourism are also required to undertake a minimum of three internship programmes to qualify for the award of the degree.
The department offers service courses to departments in the Faculty of Education, and to Departments of History, Fine and Applied Arts and other interested departments which may require some knowledge of the subject or wish to know what Archaeology is all about. For example, Fundamentals of Archaeology, Theory and Methods in Archaeology, Human Evolution, e.t.c, give some insight of what Archaeology is all about.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the programme is to develop skills and give training to undergraduate students to enable them to handle culture and tourism-related matters. This will lend support to the emerging realization of the relationships between culture and tourism. The above Philosophy informs the decision of the Department to offer courses that will enhance students’ proficiency in these areas of human pursuit.
Objectives
The courses are designed to equip students for careers in schools, Social and Cultural Institutions, Museums, Arts Councils Ministries, Tourism Corporations and Boards, Hotels and related areas. They are also aimed at preparing students for postgraduate programmes/ researches.
Scope
The courses cover Archaeology, Tourism and related areas in the humanities with special emphasis on Africa. At the third year level, students will choose either to specialize in Archaeology or Tourism.
Job Opportunities
Graduates of these programmes can be employed as cultural attaches in embassies, cultural officers/archaeologists in museums, Ministries of Information, Culture and Tourism. They can also be employed as tourism officers in tour operating agencies, airline establishments and other related areas. They will also be equipped to manage travel agencies, hotel outfits, courier, and car hire services.
