Civil Engineering

Philosophy and Objective of the Programme

The objectives of this programme have been; 

i. to give undergraduate students firm academic foundation in the basic principles of civil engineering.

ii. to introduce them to recent developments in relevant areas of Civil Engineering, and

iii. to equip them to meet the challenges of professional engineering employment in the Nigeria in particular and the world at large.

The philosophy behind this programme takes cognizance of the fact that for a developing country, the graduate engineer is likely to face all possible engineering problems, many outside his specialty, the programme is therefore broad based so as to give a mechanical or civil engineer for example the basic principles and methods of electrical and mechanical engineering. Thus, the emphasis in first two years of the programme is on common basics covering all departments of the Faculty of Engineering.

The programme ultimately provides would-be graduate civil engineers with basic knowledge in the fields of structures, hydraulics, soil mechanics and foundations, transportation, public health engineering and materials. Graduates of this programme can find employment in the design and construction industries including highways, government establishment, research organizations, water supply corporations, ports and harbours. Postgraduate programmes are offered in four areas of specialization namely, structures, materials and construction, water resources/public health engineering and soil mechanics and foundation. 

Admission Requirements 

The Department offers four and five year programmes leading to the Bachelor of Engineering degree. The five-year programme is designed for students entering the University with equivalents of the Senior School Certificate (SSC) or WASCE or NECO or General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary level with at least five credits, which must include Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and English Language. Candidates   with passes in Physics and Mathematics in Higher School Certificate and have obtained a credit in Chemistry at Ordinary level may be admitted into the four-year programme. 

Programme/Sub-discipline/Discipline Structure .

The Department presently runs the Semester System. A session therefore, comprises of 2 semesters, each of 15-week lecture duration with a break in between. The courses are offered in form of lectures, tutorials, and studio/laboratory practical as the case may be. Lectures constitute about 66.3% of the total contact hours for Civil Engineering courses while the remaining 33.7% goes to tutorials/studio/laboratory practical. 

At the end of their 300-level of study, all students are required, during the long vacation to undergo a total of not less than eight weeks of practical work, being part of their industrial training known as SIWES (Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme). Fourth year students are required to also undergo a compulsory industrial training for one semester plus the long vacation period. This training is part of the graduation requirement. Excursions and planned visits to engineering projects of relevance may be organized for students during their first semester break.
