Medical Radiography and Radiological Sciences
General Information and Academic Programme
The Department of Medical Radiography and Radiological Sciences (formerly known as the Department of Radiography from its inception in 1983 to 1990 when the Department/curriculum was revised as the University changed from the Term to the Semester System) offers a five-year standard B.Sc. Degree programme in Medical Radiography and Radiological Sciences starting from the 1983/84 Academic Session. The professional sub-specialty areas, all of which the department intends to gradually cover in the years ahead, include the following: Medical Diagnostic Radiography; Medical Ultrasound Technology; Medical Radiotherapy; Nuclear Medicine Sciences and Technology; Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Technology; Computerized Axial Tomography (CATSCAN); Medical Radiological Physics, including Radiation Protection/Radiological Health Management and Education. Medical Diagnostic Radiography is the operational discipline at present.
Departmental Philosophy, Goals and Objectives
Medical Radiography and Radiological Sciences, which involve the use of ionizing radiation (including x-rays) and other forms of radiation energy in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of human diseases, is an indispensable arm of modern medical sciences and the pivot of modern diagnostic medicine.
The department believes that the great rapid scientific and technological advances and progress of the past few decades especially in medical and radiological sciences and technology can only be fully effectively harnessed for optimum practical application and utilization with enhanced University level modern scientific and technological educational training.
This high level scientific training is a major pre-requisite for proper understanding and efficient application of the modern ‘state of the Art’ sophisticated technology, as well as for the necessary innovative approach in both the carrying out of modern medical radiological/ radiographic clinical procedres, the design of modern radiological equipment items and tools and the management of modern capital and technology-intensive hospital radiology departments.
Job Opportunities
There are abundant job opportunities for graduate Medical Radiographers and Radiological Scientists in Teaching Hospitals, Specialist Hospitals, General Hospitals, Health Clinics, industry and institutions of higher learning. Job prospects will continue to increase with the fast expansion of the Healthcare System and advanced Medical Imaging Technology in Nigeria/Africa. Academic and research positions in Institution of Higher Learning are fertile grounds for the academically inclined professional/medical Radiographer and Radiological Scientist.
