General Information and Academic Programme

The Department runs three-year and four-year standard programmes leading to a B.Sc. Honours degree in Psychology.  Combined honours degrees are available. Such degrees involve Psychology and any one of the following disciplines: Sociology and Anthropology, Political Science, Economics, Religion and Philosophy.

Philosophy and Objectives

The degree programme seeks to fulfil a number of interrelated objectives: To ground the student in the principles, methods and philosophy of psychological investigation of human and animal behaviour, emphasizing in the process the interdependence of the biological, psychological, and socio-cultural influences.
To give students a first taste of the professional training and experience that will help them appreciate careers as psychologists within applied fields such as medicine, education, child, social, correctional and rehabilitational services, administration, industry, commerce, the armed forces and the police, etc. with particular reference to the needs of Nigeria and Africa in the context of which research is to be carried out.

Job Opportunities

While professionalism in Psychology requires concentrated postgraduate training in an area of specialty, the holder of a first degree in Psychology still has a lot of scope in such employment fields as:

  • Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.
  • Schools - nursery, primary, secondary and special education institutions.
  •  Clinics, psychiatric and general hospitals and medical colleges,

  • Federal government services - local and foreign
