A Team from African Archaeology Network Visits UNN
On October 08, 2010, a team from African Archaeology Network paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Professor Bartho N. Okolo.
Speaking during the occasion, the Director General of the African Archaeology Network, Professor Felix Chima, commended the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management for hosting them. He noted that the University of Nigeria is very important to them because it is the Centre for African Archaeology Network in Nigeria. He said that the main objective of the Network is on research, adding that members normally present their research work for examination during their meetings.
He mentioned other objectives of the Network to include publication of the results of their research and production of monographs for members. Others are training of personnel especially the young ones, who they hope, will take over from them, and provision of scholarship to students. He said that Nigeria has contributed in training three persons. The team later made a presentation of some archeological books to the Vice-Chancellor.
The Vice-Chancellor in his response welcomed them to the University of Nigeria, adding that he is happy to see many Africans and Nigerians in particular as members of the Network. He noted that the University of Nigeria is a large institution and the oldest in Nigeria, adding that the University was established to emancipate Africa from poverty. He congratulated them and encouraged them in their good work and promised to assist them where he can.
In a vote thanks, Professor J .A. Rakotoavisoa, from Madagascar, named the 12 member African countries of the network to include Nigeria, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Sweden, Kenya, Mozambique, Zambia, Uganda, Cameroon, Botswana, Madagascar and Ghana.
According to him, they are going to Lejja to inspect the iron mining going on there. He finally commended the Vice-Chancellor and his Management for the warm reception accorded them.
