The idea of establishing Linkage programmes with some foreign universities came to fruition with the introduction of the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) by the Federal Military Government. The idea was conceived or hatched in order to provide solution to scare foreign exchange required for procurement of teaching and research materials. The programme provides great opportunities for students and staff to acquire knowledge through exposure and cross-fertilization of ideas.

The Department of Agricultural Engineering (DAE) of the University has a linkage programme with the Centre for Irrigation Engineering (CIE) of the Katholieke University Leuven (KUL) on Water Resources Development for Domestic Use and small-scale Irrigation Scheme in South Eastern Nigeria.

The CID-TUNS-UNN Linkage project is based in the Agricultural Engineering Department, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. It is sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and is specifically between Agricultural Engineering Department at the Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS), Halifax, Canada and Agricultural Engineering Department, UNN.

The immediate aims and objectives of the linkage programme are to provide short-term specialised training to academic and technical staff of the University of Nigeria in the theoretical and practical aspects of immunology; immunoparasitology and parasite epidemiology at Nottingham University.

In May 1989, a linkage agreement was concluded between the Katholieke University of Leuven, Belgium and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The aim of the linkage is to develop a maintenance culture at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to strengthen the teaching capacity and to restore conditions for research to an acceptable level.
