Professor Okolo's Giant Strides in UNN

News and events

We all thought it was the usual talk when Professor Bartho Okolo, upon assuming office as the Vice-Chancellor of UNN on June 9, 2009 promised a revamped system that would be based on research and innovation. But the noticeable transformation within the school environment confirms that his administration is focused at making UNN a world class University.

A tour of the University would substantiate our stance on the performance of this administration. The Google internet wireless, the construction of ICT data centre, the well organized UNN shuttle taxis and buses painted green and white, the issuance of certificates to graduands during convocation, the publishing of students examination results after two weeks and the construction of several buildings to meet up with standards are just some of his efforts to portray his drive for innovation and research. His new policies have promoted a stress-free system of education within the university. For instance, the release of results two weeks after examination. Hitherto, results could be held for as long as lecturers desired before they are released. Sometimes, this action could be detrimental in that it could lead to an extra year for students who failed some courses.

Professor Okolo would be marked in history as the most aesthetic-loving Vice-Chancellor UNN ever had. This is because the university has never had it this good in terms of beautification of its environment. The planting of ornamental plants, erection of water fountains, construction of walk-ways and the general landscaping of the university are some of the aesthetic elements present in the school environment. This, no doubt, yields a conducive environment for learning. Aside its educational effects, this beautification have encouraged entertainment as it is now common to see artistes use the university premises for movies and music videos. In terms of research, Professor Okolo revisited the use of impact factor as a criterion for promoting lecturers. This policy would enhance fact-finding, and in the long run, make the university and its ideas productive and globally competitive.

Regardless of the initial set back his administration suffered as a result of hitches in communication with students, the chief executive has proven himself competent by employing the best hands in the university’s public relations unit to help the situation. He has also redeemed the reputation of the university in the international scene and acceptance from the publics of the university. Furthermore, the Vice-Chancellor has implemented programmes that have positively impacted the lives of students. Prominent among these policies is the renovation of hostels both at the Nsukka and Enugu campuses of the university. Also worthy of note is the near efficient security systems put in place to safeguard the school environment. While we hail Professor Okolo for these strides, it is necessary we bring to his notice the need to ensure that the development is evenly spread. For instance, students at Okeke, Isa Kaita hostels are yet to feel that, the school is enjoying. Attention should be given to them. We also urge that all ongoing projects be completed before the expiration of his tenure. Abandoned projects would taint the aesthetic image of the university based on this administration’s vision. In all, Professor Okolo has proven that he is a man of his words and with great power comes great responsibility. Our hope is that the drive in him would spur him into the completion of all projects he initiated. This way, he would be remembered as a great mind, who did not just talk but acted to promote development in the university.
