It also serves as an interactive as well as entertainment forum for students with talents and skills to express themselves especially in radio broadcasting and music.
HISTORY/OVERVIEW
Lion Fm is a community radio station located in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and it broadcasts on the 91.1 MHz frequency. The station was started in the year 2002 by students of the University, Henry Emele and Uchenna Mbuko. It was first known as Mbanefo FM due to its location in Mbanefo (Male) Hostel. Its name was later changed to Franco Fm as its reach expanded to cover the group of Hostels known as “Franco Republic”. As the Station grew popular, the University authorities took interest in the project and thus, the station Lion Fm was born as the station further expanded its reach to cover the entire Nsukka Campus of the University and beyond in the year 2005.
Currently the station has developed immensely under the ingenious management of Uchenna Mbuko, the co-ordinator, and happens to be the first and only community radio station in the country operating on a 24 hours basis. With a host of seasoned presenters, interesting programmes and its interactive style of broadcasting that cater for the information and entertainment needs of both staff, students and residents outside the campus, Lion FM has become the toast of the University and Nsukka community hence its slogan – Your Interactive Station.

It also demonstrated its outside broadcast capability by covering and relaying live broadcasts of the 40th convocation ceremonies of the University of Nigeria in the both Nsukka and Enugu another first, being the only radio station running simultaneous broadcasts on two campuses separated by 50 km distance.
Programmes broadcasted are: Wake Up Call, Daily Sports Review, Sports Theatre, Cruise Easy, Nsukka Deje, Menu Menu (both programmes in the vernacular), Asta la Vista, Vital Issues, Sunset Boulevard among others.
