Page 1 of 5 Brief History of the Department Based on the request of the Federal Government, Social Work was established in 1976 in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the Faculty of the Sociaal Sciences principally to train and produce middle level manpower who can man the Social Welfare Departments in the Ministries. Since 1976, the Social Work Unit has pioneered the training of University level Social Workers in the country, in order to satisfy the need for this specialized manpower. It offered only the undergraduate Diploma Programme at first take off. In 1985 it started offering the Degree Programme and in 1986/87 session it started offering Post – Graduate Programmes viz Post-Graduate Diploma, M.Sc and Ph.D. Social Work started as a Unit under the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, in November 2001, it was given a Sub-Departmental Status and in 2006, it was given a Departmental Status.
